Research: ClimateCCRC research focuses on the nature of climate states in the past, present, and future. Using coupled climate models in combination with emprical data, CCRC is investigating the factors that influence global and regional climate variability on time-scales of days, seasons and centuries. A particular focus is on the extratropical and high latitude climate system, including the nature of Southern Hemisphere coupled modes of ocean-land-atmosphere variability. Another focus is on the role of the Southern Oceans and the Australian terrestrial surface in the genesis of Australian climate extremes. |

Reading past climates to see the futureWith the massive Antarctic Circumpolar Current circling the Southern Ocean, largely preventing north-south flow across it and thereby isolating Antarctica from the subtropics, many scientists believe the existence of the Southern Ocean acts to cool Antarctica. But what other climate patterns might the Southern Ocean control? |
