Nathan has a background in Human Geography and is interested in forms of digital mapping (GIS) as well as population studies. His primary topic of interest is environmental justice, which examines the ways that environmental hazards and their health and economic effects are distributed across populations, in particular populations characterised by socio-economic status and ethnicity. His undergraduate honours project focused on the distribution of airborne industrial emissions across Sydney, and the populations exposed to the most hazardous chemicals by ethnicity and socio-economic status. His research will further explore this topic area paying particular attention to methods of measuring pollution in Australia and the statistical methods for determining the relationships between populations and pollution.
