Alan Dupont is Adjunct Professor of International Security at the Climate Change Research Centre in the Faculty of Science, University of New South Wales. He is also a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Lowy Institute for International Policy, the Washington based Atlantic Council and Contributing National Security Editor for The Australian newspaper. He was previously the foundation Michael Hintze Professor of International Security at the University of Sydney, Director of the Centre for International Security Studies, CEO of the US Studies Centre and Professor of International Security at the University of New South Wales.

Professor Dupont is one of Australia’s best known strategists, Asianists and thought leaders with an international reputation for his work on geopolitical risk, foreign policy, defence and climate change. He wrote an influential 2006 monograph for the Lowy Institute on climate change and national security in collaboration with one of Australia’s leading climate change scientists, Graeme Pearman, and was the lead author on the strategic implications of climate change for the 2008 Garnaut Climate Change Review. The author of nearly 100 books, monographs and articles on defence and international security, his path breaking study of the non-military, transnational challenges to East Asia’s security for Cambridge University Press (East Asia Imperilled) is generally acknowledged to be the authoritative academic work in the field.

Professor Dupont is an Australian representative to the Asean Regional Forum’s Register of Experts and Eminent Persons and a member of the Indonesia-Australia Senior Advisory Group to the heads of the Australian and Indonesian armed forces. He previously served on the board of the Australian Army’s Land Warfare Studies Centre and was a member of the Foreign Affairs Council (an advisory body to the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade), the Australian Defence Minister’s Defence and National Security Advisory Council and the Council of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. He was also a ministerial advisor to several Australian Defence Ministers as well as foreign policy advisor to the former President of East Timor, Jose Ramos Horta.

Professor Dupont holds a PhD in International Relations from the Australian National University and is a graduate of the Royal Military College, Duntroon, and the US Foreign Service Institute.
